Intriguing new binocular from Steiner who have a history of innovation especially when it comes to optical coating technology. This binocular employs photochromic objective lenses that like some sun glasses reduce the amount of light reaching the eye in very bright sunlight and then conversely allows more light to the eye in overcast or dull conditions. The Steiner Bluhorizons 10x42 binoculars also reduce blue and white light through its coating technology. Convention tells us the brighter the binocular image is, the better and clearer the image will be, in general terms. Bright sunlight conditions can however cause issues in the form of haze, glare and reflections and a significant reduction in contrast if your binocular coatings are already biased to blue light. Overall the Steiner Bluhorizons 10x42 is actually very good. Yes it darkens the overall image quite noticeably and cuts blue and white light from the image but in doing so increases contrast, reduces bright hazy lighting conditions, reduces glare and reflections resulting in an image that is remarkably clear with clearly defined contours and with sharp detail and transparency. It is also more relaxing over extended viewing sessions as blue and white light is tiring on the eye. Even in normal overcast conditions this binocular delivers an extremely clear, sharp and relaxing image albeit a little darker than other binoculars of a similar specification. Well balanced in the hand the binoculars feel lighter than the specification suggests. Very good focus, smooth and accurate. A joy to use. Highly recommended.
